ELLEN SPRING MOORE SCHOLARSHIP
The Roanoke Chapter of the Virginia Women Attorney’s Association (VWAA), in partnership with Woods Rogers PLC, is pleased to offer annual scholarship awards. A minimum of two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded annually depending on the amount of funds available in any given year and the number of recipients chosen by the Selection Committee at its discretion. The Scholarship Committee reviews all applications and selects nominees to recommend to the Selection Committee for final approval of the award disbursement.
The scholarship fund was named after Ellen Spring Moore following her death in 2005, at the age of 39. Following a distinguished career with the CIA, the law firm of White & Case and the United States Justice Department, Ellen joined the legal community in Roanoke, Virginia. While Ellen practiced in Roanoke for less than five years, in that short window of time she threw herself into the practice of law at Woods Rogers PLC and was welcomed as a partner in 2005; became engaged and married to her beloved husband; built a home and started a farm; and completed one of the most grueling marathons in the world, 26.2 miles up and down the Pacific Coast in Big Sur, California. Most notably, Ellen accomplished all of this with joy, grace and an amazing sense of self and humor all the while battling melanoma, the most deadly form of cancer.
Ellen was an outstanding young lawyer in both service to her country and her community, whose accomplishments were recognized by all in just a short span of years. Ellen’s memory continues to inspire others who are dedicated to the advancement of women in the legal community.
