James F. Douthat, is a native of the Roanoke Valley. Jim joined the firm of Hazlegrove, Dickinson & Rea as an associate in June 1967. He took a leave of absence to go on active duty in the United States Army from September 1967 to December 1, 1971 as Captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps and then returned to practice in Roanoke. In 1985 the Hazlegrove law firm merged with the Woods Rogers firm.
Although Jim was at first a commercial litigator, his primary areas of practice in the last ten years have been in commercial and bankruptcy law as well as real estate planning and development. Jim has served as counsel for a number of commercial real estate developments to include Valley View Shopping Center, Valley View Crossing, the Sheraton Hotel and Wal-Mart facilities. In addition to real estate and general corporate representation, Jim has had extensive bankruptcy experience in both the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia.
Jim is also active in community affairs and is currently the President of the History Museum and Historical Society of Western Virginia, the President of the Board of Directors of The Achievement Center and The Achievement Center Foundation and has taken an active role in the promotion of a greenway system in the Roanoke Valley through the representation of and acting as a member of the Board of Directors of The Hanging Rock Battlefield & Railway Preservation Foundation.
Jim graduated from Hampden Sydney College in 1964 with a B.A. in history and graduated, cum laude, from Washington & Lee University School of Law in 1967 where he was the lead articles editor of the Washington & Lee Law Review and Vice President of his class.
