Michael K. Smeltzer is a native of Abingdon, Virginia. While in law school, Mike was a member of the Law Review and participated in student government activities. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army infantry upon graduation from VMI. He entered the Army as a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corps, obtained the rank of Captain and was released from active duty in November 1963. Later that year he entered law practice in Roanoke. In 1975 he became one of the founding members of the firm of Smeltzer & Hart which later merged with the Hazlegrove Law Firm, becoming Hazlegrove, Dickinson, Rea, Smeltzer & Brown. In 1985, the Hazlegrove firm and the Woods, Rogers firm merged. Mike currently serves on the board of the History Museum and Historical Society of Western Virginia. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America. Mike graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1958 with a degree in Biology and Chemistry. He attended the School of Law at Washington & Lee University and obtained his law degree in 1961.
