Al Knighton focuses on business and corporate law, specifically on tax-exempt bonds, taxable financings, employee benefits, and nonprofit organizations. He has represented Carilion Clinic and affiliated hospitals in more than $1.5 billion of tax-exempt financings and has served as bond counsel, borrower’s counsel, lender’s counsel, or trustee’s counsel on other bond issues totaling more than $3.5 billion.

His clients include hospitals, nursing homes, retirement communities, schools, colleges, universities, other nonprofit organizations, water and sewer authorities, localities, and banks.

Al serves as corporate counsel for many charitable organizations, including cultural entities and social welfare organizations. He also counsels employers on ESOPs, 401(k) plans, deferred compensation plans, health and life insurance, disability and other welfare plans, cafeteria plans, and dealings with the IRS and Department of Labor.

Al has been recognized by Super Lawyers and in Best Lawyers in America in employee benefits (ERISA) law, project finance law, and public finance law. Best Lawyers named him as a Lawyer of the Year in 2013 and 2014. Two state-wide publications have named him to their top lists—as a Legal Elite by Virginia Business magazine.
