Accounting Manager (Roanoke, VA)

Woods Rogers is seeking an Accounting Manager to oversee the day-to-day accounting operations of our law firm, including managing the accounting team and maintaining internal controls. This role is responsible for the management, training, and development of the personnel within the accounting department. The Accounting Manager reports to the Director of Accounting and collaborates regularly with other departments. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in law firm accounting and a proactive, collaborative management approach. This is a full-time position in our Roanoke, Virginia office.  

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee daily accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, trust accounting, general ledger, and bank reconciliations. 
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, including training, performance management, and providing timely guidance on accounting issues and transactions as they arise. 
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management processes. 
  • Develop and maintain internal controls and policies for financial management of assets and financial reporting. 
  • Identify process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial operations. 
  • Monitor and manage accounting systems and software, ensuring they are up-to-date and functioning properly.  
  • Conduct analysis of recurring accounting issues and implement corrective actions. 
  • Provide training and support to attorneys, staff, and accounting personnel on accounting processes and compliance.  
  • Coordinate with external vendors and service providers as needed.  
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.  

 Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. 
  • Minimum of five (5) years of accounting experience. 
  • Proven ability to manage a team and help others develop new skills. 
  • Strong understanding of GAAP accounting principles. 
  • Strong understanding of trust accounting rules. 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills. 
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. 
  • Effective communicator with the ability to work collaboratively across departments. 
  • Ability to resolve problems and concerns with a high level of professionalism. 
  • Strong strategic thinking skills with the ability to develop and implement policies and procedures. 
  • High level of discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive client information.   
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and an advanced MS Excel skillset. 

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Previous work experience in an accounting or finance role at a law firm or certified public accounting (CPA) firm.  
  • Previous experience working with the following: 
    • Financial and Practice Management systems, such as Elite Enterprise, 3E, Aderant, or ProLaw. 
    • Travel and expense management solutions, such as Chrome River or SAP Concur. 
    • Fixed asset management software, such as Sage Fixed Assets, SAP Enterprise Asset Management, or CCH ProSystem fx Fixed Assets.
