What do we mean by “HR Lifeline?”
2020 has been a year like none other. Since March, the role of the human resources department is front and center in daily operations as issues of racism, inclusion, and equality appear next to COVID-19 in the headlines. While life may have paused for a few months for some businesses, understanding human resources laws and issues is now more crucial than ever.
With consideration for the health and safety of our guests and employees, Woods Rogers’ annual seminar series will move to a virtual platform in 2020. We believe it is imperative to support you now with educational content that guides you through both of these crises, as well as provides you with SHRM and HRCI credits.
As always, our presentations will be interactive. We’ll cover topics that have come out of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as other top issues that require the guidance of a human resources leader. From creating equality and an inclusive workplace to updates on FMLA/FLSA post COVID-19, reviewing big changes in Virginia Employment Laws, and closing with our annual overview of actions from the “Big Three,” we’ll bring the same educational and high energy experience you expect, just in a different format for 2020.

Be a Center of Inclusion
OCTOBER 1, 2020 | 1:30‑3:00 pm
Our nation is engaging in widespread discourse about racism and we’ve just had one of the most important Supreme Court decisions in years. You should be evaluating how your business adheres to anti-discrimination laws—from sexual orientation and transgender status to race—it’s about equality for all humans. Let’s talk about steps employers should take to build an inclusive, equal, and diverse workplace. It’s a topic that demands action and results every single day. Don’t let silence on these issues be your statement.
Virginia’s New Employment Laws
OCTOBER 8, 2020 | 1:30‑3:00 pm
Big changes happened on July 1, 2020, and big changes are coming on January 1, 2021. Certain employment claims can proceed in Virginia’s state courts for the first time, so expect more employment litigation in this new venue. Pre-trial dismissal is tougher to win in state court than in federal courts, and litigation could be riskier and more costly to employers. Review what changed in July and prepare for changes in the New Year.
FMLA, ADA & More Post COVID-19
OCTOBER 15, 2020 | 1:30‑3:00 pm
In March, employers were confronted with new laws as a result of the pandemic, many of which are in effect through December 31, 2020 but could extend longer. If—and when—the post COVID-19 recovery starts, it won’t be static and HR leaders need to be prepared. From leave, accommodations, and a stronger look at mental health, what were the workplace HR issues caused by COVID‑19?
Between A Rock and A Hard Place: Competing Interests
OCTOBER 22, 2020 | 1:30‑3:00 pm
HR frequently has to make a decision for one employee that impacts others. In this session, HR will be confronted and lawyers will debate how to handle these and other “rock-and-hard-place” decisions. From accommodating an employee’s religious preference to not recognizing a transgender employee’s choice of identity or transferring an employee to a vacant position as a result of another’s employee’s FMLA leave—this session brings real-life examples for important decision-making.
Legal Update: Federal Case Law & News from the Big 3
OCTOBER 29, 2020 | 1:30‑3:00 pm
The series closes with our annual summary of the biggest cases and actions from the DOL, the EEOC, and the NLRB. Pandemic issues aside, these agencies continue to enforce rules and regulations throughout the year.
