Neil Birkhoff
Principal

Neil Birkhoff, a leader in our Tax and Trusts and Estates practice groups, will be the Interim Director of the Tax Clinic at the Washington & Lee University School of Law through December 15, 2020.  In this role, Neil will oversee eight students who will provide pro-bono representation for low-income taxpayers in income tax matters before the IRS and the Virginia Department of Taxation.

Neil says, “Accepting this role allows me to continue my long-time commitment to providing legal representation for low-income taxpayers. I have been associated with The Community Tax Law Project—the first non-university affiliated low-income taxpayer clinic (LITC) established in the United States—for more than 25 years as a volunteer attorney, board member, president, and advisory board member. Commitment to justice requires more than words.”

In addition to his law practice, Neil is an adjunct professor of law at the Washington and Lee University School of Law, where he teaches classes on nonprofit organizations and trusts and estates.

Neil will be working with the Tax Clinic beginning on July 7 through mid-December. He remains available for clients during business hours and available to his students as needed.
