Beyond the Gig Economy: New Jersey’s Proposed Rule Could Reshape Independent Contractor Use
In an article for HR.com’s September issue, Woods Rogers’ Fred Schutt provides an update on recent developments that could pose significant changes for employers who rely on independent contractors. In particular, companies built on a gig model face a new front in the battle over worker classification.
"The gig companies’ success in maintaining their business model has been threatened again by a new proposed rule from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development that seems targeted at gig workers,” Fred writes. "This time, though, the effect of the rule, which NJDOL insists merely codifies the state’s ABC Test under existing case law, appears to go much further than the gig economy."
