Retail Cannabis Bill Veto Applies Brakes to Budding Practice Area
Woods Rogers Principal Anne Bibeau recently spoke with Virginia Lawyers Weekly about the future of Virginia’s retail cannabis market following Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s veto of legislation that would have established legal recreational cannabis sales in the Commonwealth. The article explores how the veto delays the launch of a regulated retail market, what it means for businesses and consumers, and how attorneys are preparing for the possibility of future legislation.
Anne told Virginia Lawyers Weekly that she expects lawmakers to revisit the issue during the next legislative session: “I don’t have any doubt that this is going to come back. I anticipate that we’ll see this again next spring and the kinks will be worked out by then, because there wasn’t a lot of difference between what the governor wanted and what the General Assembly wanted.”
The article also highlights the growing interest among businesses and entrepreneurs in a potential legal cannabis industry. According to Anne, many prospective participants are closely monitoring developments and are prepared to move quickly if legislation advances.
“I’ve gotten a lot of calls from people wanting to get into this space and are basically chomping at the bit as soon as the law is approved to move forward,” she told the publication.
