Whistleblower ‘Gold Rush’ Might Strain DOJ, Experts Warn
A new federal whistleblower program aims to encourage tips about criminal fraud by offering rewards earlier in the prosecution process, but questions remain about how those rewards will be awarded. Woods Rogers attorney Justin Lugar discussed the U.S. Department of Justice’s Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program in a recent Law360 article.
The program offers potential payments of $10,000 to $30,000 when criminal charges are filed, rather than after a case is resolved. Justin, a former federal civil fraud prosecutor, noted that it remains to be seen how the program will work in practice.
“This is trying to incentivize tips to come in, but whether they end up paying out on them, who knows,” he told Law360 in an interview.
